WiFi coverage for Kuching, Bintulu and Sibu by year end

WiFi coverage for Kuching, Bintulu and Sibu by year end

KUCHING: Wide-Fidelity (WiFi) Internet is nothing new at hip bars and cafes but imagine being able to surf the Internet while at the bus stop, or better still, while riding the bus. This will no longer be a far-fetched scenario as the government has promised that WiFi will be available in Kuching, Bintulu and Sibu by the end of this year at the latest. Since late last year, the service has been on trial in the resort city of Miri. According to Infrastructure Development and Communication Assistant Minister Lee Khim Shin, more than 100 WiFi bases are being set up in these cities and towns.“Seventy WiFi bases are planned to be installed around Kuching City. Presently, nine have been completed here,” Lee told the Dewan Undangan Negeri yesterday during the question and answer session. He said coverage in Kuching included some 32 businesses, housing and academic institutions.

“In Sibu, 25 base stations are planned; seven have been installed. A total of 24 premises will be covered eventually. For Bintulu, there will be installation of approximately 25 WiFi base stations.”Presently about 60 to 70 per cent of planned WiFi -enabled areas in Miri are in operation. Efforts are concentrated to inspect quality of service, like coverage strength. Lee was responding to a question from Vincent Goh (BN-Pelawan) on the matter. So far, the main WiFi beneficiaries are concentrated in town or city centres.
